Harris Launches Campaign Against Trump, Emphasizing Law and Order

Kamala Harris kicked off her presidential campaign with a speech highlighting the contrast between her experience as a prosecutor and Donald Trump’s history as a convicted criminal.

US ELECTIONS UPDATES

Vice President Kamala Harris made her first formal pitch for her presidential candidacy on Tuesday, emphasizing her background as a prosecutor during a speech at a Milwaukee rally. She highlighted the stark contrast between her experience and that of her opponent, who is entangled in numerous legal issues.

Before serving as vice president, senator, and attorney general of California, Harris worked as a courtroom prosecutor, taking on a wide range of criminals.

“I know Donald Trump’s type,” she declared to an enthusiastic crowd, who responded with chants of “lock him up.” Harris underscored Trump’s ongoing legal troubles, presenting a narrative of prosecutor versus convict.

“As attorney general of California, I took on one of our country’s largest for-profit colleges that was scamming students,” Harris recalled. “Donald Trump ran a for-profit college that scammed students. As a prosecutor, I specialized in cases involving sexual abuse. Trump was found liable for committing sexual abuse. As attorney general in California, I took on the big Wall Street banks and held them accountable for fraud. Donald Trump was just found guilty of fraud on 34 counts.”

Harris' Campaign Momentum

Harris' Campaign Momentum

Tuesday marked Harris’ first campaign rally since President Joe Biden ended his reelection bid on Sunday and endorsed her in his place. The 2024 presidential election campaign of Kamala Harris appears to have reinvigorated the Democratic base, raising over $81 million in the first 24 hours and over $100 million in the first two days. For comparison, Biden collected $72 million in his first quarter of fundraising after announcing his reelection bid last year, and former President Barack Obama raised $85 million in his first quarter after announcing his plan to run again.

Securing the Nomination

Harris has also gained the support of enough delegates to become the Democratic presidential nominee, though an official vote still has to take place. The party’s convention begins on August 19, but Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison said the party will select a nominee by August 7 after a virtual roll call.

Key Campaign Initiatives

In her 17-minute speech, Harris outlined her goals for the 2024 presidential election campaign, focusing on:

  • Ensuring no child grows up in poverty
  • Guaranteeing every worker has the freedom to join a union
  • Providing affordable health care, child care, and paid family leave
  • Ensuring every senior can retire with dignity
  • Supporting universal background checks for gun legislation and an assault weapon ban
  • Restoring reproductive rights

“We will stop Donald Trump’s extreme abortion bans because we trust women to make decisions about their own body and not have their government tell them what to do,” she said. “And when Congress passes a law to restore reproductive freedoms, as president of the United States, I will sign it into law.”

Future Steps and Potential Running Mate

Absent from Harris’ rally speech was any hint about who she is considering for a running mate, though Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, and Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona are reportedly among the top contenders.

Debate Anticipation

A debate matchup between Trump and Harris seems likely after the Republican nominee expressed his interest in debating Harris, possibly more than once. He stated, “I think debating’s important for a presidential race. You sort of have an obligation to debate.”

Kamala Harris’ 2024 presidential election campaign is off to a robust start, setting the stage for an intense and significant election battle.
