India is set to face South Africa in the final on Saturday.
England’s defense of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup has come to an end as India triumphed in the semi-final by 68 runs, securing their place in the final.
Despite some inconsistent performances earlier in the tournament, Jos Buttler’s team advanced from the Super Eights with a strong showing, highlighted by Buttler’s unbeaten 83 against the USA and a hat-trick from Chris Jordan. However, they couldn’t overcome an undefeated Indian side that has been dominant throughout the tournament.
India posted a total of 171/7, while England could only manage 103 all out in their chase.
Leading by Example: A Captain's Triumph
Captain Rohit Sharma led the way for India, stabilizing the innings after early losses. Virat Kohli was bowled by Reece Topley for 9, and Rishabh Pant was caught by Jonny Bairstow off the bowling of Sam Curran for 4.
Joined by Suryakumar Yadav at the crease, Sharma formed a strong partnership despite a rain delay that paused play for over an hour after eight overs. Together, they added 73 runs before Sharma fell to a superb googly from Adil Rashid, scoring 57 off 39 balls. Suryakumar followed in the next over, scoring 47 before sending Jofra Archer’s slower ball high into the air, caught by Chris Jordan.
Chris Jordan then made a significant impact in the closing overs, finishing with figures of 3/37. He had the chance for a second hat-trick of the tournament after dismissing Hardik Pandya (caught by Curran for a quick 23 off 13) and Shivam Dube (caught by Buttler for a first-ball duck).
In the final over, Jordan secured a third wicket as Axar Patel edged to Phil Salt for a valuable 10 runs, capping off a dramatic finish.
England's Reply Falls Short
In India vs England match Openers Buttler and Phil Salt made a solid start, but the combination of Axar Patel and Jasprit Bumrah dismantled the top order. Buttler toe-ended Patel behind into the gloves of Pant for 23 off 15 balls, followed quickly by Salt, bowled by Bumrah for 5.
New batsman Jonny Bairstow did not trouble the scorers, facing just three deliveries before being bowled by Patel. Moeen Ali was out for 8 in ignominious fashion, crawling back to his ground while Pant removed the bails, leaving England struggling at 46/4 before the end of the eighth over. Sam Curran was next to fall, with Kuldeep Yadav trapping him on the front pad as he tried to play across the line.
Harry Brook valiantly tried to salvage the innings, hitting an admirable 25 off 19 balls before becoming another victim of Kuldeep. Chris Jordan joined him on the sidelines two overs later, lbw for a single. At that point, England was 72/7, needing 100 runs off their remaining 46 balls.
Although Liam Livingstone was still at the crease, he was run out in the next over for 11. Adil Rashid followed by the same method two balls later for 2, leaving Archer and Topley to try and reclaim some dignity, which they did by ushering England past the 100 mark. However, it was all over when Archer was given out lbw to Bumrah, having made an excellent 21 off 15 balls.
