Haryana is one of eight states slated to hold legislative assembly elections this year, alongside India’s general elections and other state elections in 2024.
The state will vote to elect all 90 members of its assembly, as the current term of the coalition government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), is nearing its end.
Here’s all you need to know about the upcoming 15th Haryana Elections in 2024.
The Haryana Elections 2024 are expected to be held on or before October 2024, as the current Legislative Assembly’s term ends on November 3, 2024. However, the exact dates for the elections have not yet been announced.
Haryana is presently governed by a coalition of multiple political parties. The coalition includes the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), and seven independent alliances. This coalition came into power to form a majority government in the state.
Chief Minister: Nayab Singh Saini from the BJP holds the position of Chief Minister. As the Chief Minister, Saini is responsible for the overall administration of the state and implementing government policies.
Deputy Chief Minister: Dushyant Chautala, who is the President of the JJP, serves as the Deputy Chief Minister. Chautala’s role involves supporting the Chief Minister and overseeing specific departments and initiatives assigned to him.
The coalition between the BJP and JJP, along with the support of seven independent alliances, was formed to secure a stable government in Haryana. Each party and independent alliance within the coalition has a role in the governance of the state, contributing to policy-making and administrative decisions.
This coalition government represents a strategic alliance between major and minor political entities in Haryana, aimed at ensuring political stability and effective governance. The partnership between BJP and JJP is particularly notable as it combines the strengths and voter bases of both parties to manage the state’s affairs collaboratively.
The last Assembly elections in Haryana were held on October 21, 2019. In these elections, the BJP, led by Manohar Lal Khattar, won 40 seats, making it the largest party but falling short of a majority. To form the government, the BJP allied with the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), which had won 10 seats, and secured support from 7 Independent MLAs. The Congress party came in second with 31 seats, and the regional party INLD secured just 1 seat.
As a result, a coalition government was formed with Manohar Lal Khattar from the BJP continuing as the Chief Minister for a second term, and Dushyant Chautala from the JJP becoming the Deputy Chief Minister.
