UK Calls for UN Investigation into Bangladesh Turmoil, Avoids Mention of Sheikh Hasina Asylum

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated that his government hopes for a “peaceful and democratic future” in Bangladesh.

The British government has urged the United Nations to lead an investigation into the recent turmoil in Bangladesh, which resulted in Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and her subsequent flight from the country. UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy emphasized the need for a “peaceful and democratic future” for Bangladesh.

In his statement, Lammy said, “The people of Bangladesh deserve a full and independent UN-led investigation into the events of the past few weeks. The UK wants to see action taken to ensure Bangladesh has a peaceful and democratic future. The UK and Bangladesh have deep people-to-people links and shared Commonwealth values.”

Lammy highlighted the “unprecedented levels of violence and tragic loss of life” over the past two weeks in Bangladesh. He mentioned that the Chief of the Army Staff has announced a transitional period to stabilize the situation.

“All sides now need to work together to end the violence, restore calm, de-escalate the situation, and prevent any further loss of life,” Lammy urged.

Sheikh Hasina, who had been in power for the past 15 years, resigned amid deadly student-led protests. She fled to India and is expected to leave for London, where she may seek political asylum, according to sources. Her plane is currently being refueled for the journey.
